La Quinta's Farmers Market Debuts on November 9th

Fresh Produce Market in La QuintaOld Town merchants and the City of La Quinta are partnering to present the town's first open-air certified farmers' market where fresh produce and goods will be offered by 16 vendors beginning Sunday, November 9th from 8 am to 12:30 pm in Old Town off of Calle Tampico.  The La Quinta Farmers' Market will be held every Sunday and will offer fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, honey, eggs, cheese, bread, herbs and nuts.

"Supporting local farming families is critical," Mayor Don Adolph said. "Residents will have a new option to buy fresher and healthier foods."

Fresh Produce in La QuintaOrganizers said a chef's booth also will be available, and will include cooking demonstrations, tips and recipes. Stroll the booths while listening to musical entertainment which will also be offered each week.

When a farmers market is certified, it means the California Department of Food and Agriculture has approved the offerings. The farmers who will be selling items at the La Quinta market have grown their produce within 100 miles of the Coachella Valley.  Come join the fun and buy fresh from our local farmers!

Riding the Real Estate Market or the Stock Market?

stock marketThe recent roller coaster ride of the stock market has left many of us confused and anxious.  The Fox Financial News this morning said that the Dow has lost 33% this year, the Nasdaq is down 35% and the S&P is down 36%.  That sounds awful when we consider what our retirement and savings funds are worth today, especially if they are relatively "new" investments. 

In 1987, my husband worked for Merrill Lynch International as a Financial Consultant in downtown San Diego and I was with Merrill Lynch Realty in La Jolla.  I had just won a listing contest for Merrill Lynch and Real Estate Roller Coasterthey sent the winners to Europe for the prize.  My husband and I were in St. Tropez and having breakfast when another American nearby showed us the French newspaper with the title something like..."Le Stock Market Plunge".  We realized then that life as we knew it would change for us given our professions, and it did. 

It has been over 20 years since that happened and since that October, the Dow has been up a whopping 409% since 1987, the Nasdag up 486% and the S & P up 318%, according to Fox Financial News today.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the stock market is a roller coaster ride and sometimes going up takes longer than coming down, which can often be a breathtakingly fast ride, as evidenced by this past week.  Next time you are considering investing, you might want to consider the less volatile real estate market with today's short sales, foreclosures and low interest rates being offered for good credit... at least you and your family can have some measure of personal control over "real property", be able to improve on it to add value, or simply live in your investment and enjoy the ride from the comfort of your front porch.

Dyson & Dyson Realty Suddenly Closes Its 7 Offices in the Desert

Bob DysonDyson & Dyson was one of the premier luxury real estate firms in the desert area serving the areas of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta and surrounding desert communities.  This morning we awoke to the news that the owner, Bob Dyson (who also owns Dyson's Villa Sothebys in San Diego County), notified all his desert agents and his office personnel, via email, that due to the struggling economy, personal and business finances, departure from affiliation with Sothebys and personal health reasons he is closing down his desert operations.

I have known Bob Dyson since the late 1980s when he and his wife, Lorraine and I worked at Merrill Lynch Realty in La Jolla.  This was before he owned his own companies, but we could see that he was an entrepreneur and certainly had the desire to do everything with a special touch of "class". Over the years he opened his offices of Dyson and Dyson in San Diego County, complete with the distinctive DD logo styled after the Roll Royce emblem.  He had limousines for clients, a hot air balloon, an advertising moving van for clients, a TV station and much more.  He was the first to really bring luxury into the buying process and taught us all how to pamper our clients.

Over the years Bob sold his company in San Diego to Coldwell Banker Residential and moved on to Lake Las Vegas and the desert communities.   His headquarters for Dyson was in Indian Wells and he was aggressive in bringing on some of the best talent in luxury real estate after Fred Sands sold to Coldwell Banker.  His operation here has been leading the luxury home sales for over 10 years with total reported sales topping $1.2 billion in 2005.  In my opinion, it is unprecedented that a firm with the prominence of Stormy dayDyson's would simply walk away from the marketplace.  "We've had a wonderful love affair with the desert," Bob Dyson told The Desert Sun.  "Right now is not a time to be a real estate broker."  Unfortunately, now the 112 local agents, with offices in Indian Wells, La Quinta, Rancho Mirage, Desert Springs Marriott and several country clubs, will need to find new homes for their real estate licenses. 

It is a sad day in real estate... because even though I am with Coldwell Banker, I have admired Bob & Lorraine Dyson for years and followed their careers and innovations in real estate.  Bob is a visionary and when he speaks about new ideas, I listen, because I always learn something.  Dyson & Dyson will be missed out here... the playing field has grown a lot smaller and a lot quieter and the storm clouds appear more ominous for those of us in real estate.
